Сarjacking in Ukraine: National police released statistics
Official statistics from the National Police on stolen cars, as well as information on the detection of such crimes, have not been published for a long time.
However, the other day at a briefing the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Police on combating illegal seizure of vehicles told the details of сarjacking in Ukraine.
The most frequently stolen cars brands are:
According to the head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the National Police Vadym Dzyubynsky, European and American cars are in much less demand among thieves.
Also during the briefing, they emphasized that the easiest way to earn money for criminals is to chantage and resell the stolen car to its owner. When this method does not work, the vehicle is distilled abroad or disassembled.
According to official data, this year 29 Ukrainians went on the terms of the carjackers and paid for the return of their car. But, unfortunately, there may be much more such cases, as Dzyubynsky noted, because not everyone turns to the police.
If we compare the number of stolen cars in 2019 (3,608, of which 1,401 were found) and for 8 months of 2020 (3,152, of which 1,627 were found), two supporting theses arise at once.
On the one hand, the detection of crimes related to carjacking is growing, and on the other – the number of stolen cars in 2020 may exceed the data for 2019. Just in 8 months, the number of thefts exceeded 3,000, but the peak of such crimes traditionally occurs in the autumn months.
Given such data, we advise you to take responsibility for the protection of your car. This is especially true of car owners of those brands that are constantly targeted by thieves. Given the analysis of Benish GPS attempts to steal premium cars for the 2nd Q of 2020, to this list can also be added such cars as Land Rover, Audi and BMW.
We will remind that the new law on strengthening of criminal liability for car theft came into force on September 25. It is assumed that imprisonment to some extent will even be a deterrent for criminals. However, it should be borne in mind that the criminal world rarely thinks about the consequences. Therefore, car owners and service center specialists are convinced that one should not expect a sharp decline in crime in the automotive industry.
